Many music-lovers wish they could have been in the room that summer’s evening in 1992 when Sharon Shannon created something magical on Whelan’s stage; an irreplicable atmosphere and performance that has carried through generations only in stories and memories. One such storyteller is the late Alan Rickman who attended Shannon’s residency while filming ‘Michael Collins’ in Dublin that year.

“My hero,” he wrote in his diary. “The joy that empties itself from her CDs is nothing to what happens live. Number after number has the whole body, the whole room moving helplessly with it. And I met her. And kissed her. And asked her to play at our wrap party. And she said yes. Home to beans on toast.”

For the first time in three decades, Sharon Shannon will return for a three-night residency in Whelan’s to celebrate her varied and incredible career since those first gigs.

The residency will run for three nights with three unique performances from August 17th to 19th. Each night will feature different casts of performers playing different repertoires – a staggering 50 pieces of music over the 3 nights with only 2 pieces that will be common to each night, showcasing the long and versatile career Sharon has had.

On the upcoming residency, Sharon said: “Each of these line-ups I play with lend themselves to different arrangements of my music and so consequently, so by having a different line-up each night, means I can have a different set list each night. So it will be a completely different show each night. I’m looking forward to bringing back the fiddle in the set and playing more tunes on the electric guitar.”

Christened a “national treasure” by President Michael D. Higgins on the Late Late Show, Sharon Shannon is an iconic Irish musician known for her arrangements of traditional tunes and Irish-influenced compositions. She has earned her name as a pioneer in the industry through her eccentric collaborations, not just in traditional music, across multiple genres, Hip Hop, Cajun, Country, Classical and Rap.

The genre-defying star has achieved multi-platinum album sales and has had several chart-topping albums, singles, and DVDs in her home country. Her album Galway Girl went 4 times platinum in Ireland with the title track winning her the Meteor award two years running for the most downloaded song. She also celebrates being the youngest ever recipient of the Meteor Lifetime Achievement Award.
